The Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department (NVFD) led the community in a solemn commemoration of the 25th anniversary of terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, last Friday.
The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people in three locations when planes crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and into a Pennsylvania field after passengers overwhelmed hijackers who were intent on striking a third site in Washington, D.C.
Jon Barbagallo, spokesperson for the NVFD, said the company marks the anniversary every year, usually at its firehouse where it has a monument crafted from a twisted piece of steel from the Trade Center.
“This year, because we are building a new fire house, we moved the ceremony to the village green, where we were joined by the community,” he said. About 60 persons attended the event, which featured music, prayers and speeches by clergy and firefighters.
