The first day for early voting for the August 11 Democratic and Republican primaries will be Monday, August 3, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. upstairs in town hall. Primary Day voting is from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Only Governor Ned Lamont and his challenger Josh Elliott appear on the Democratic ballot while Chris Shea and Jonathan De Barros are vying for the nomination for Congressional District 5 on the Republican line.
Absentee voting is already underway. Absentee ballot applications can be downloaded here. Absentee voting has been expanded, and voters no longer need to provide a specific reason or excuse to request an absentee ballot.
The town clerk processes the returned application, ensures that the voter is eligible to receive an absentee ballot and then enters the voter’s information into the Central Voter Registration System. A unique ballot identification number is created for each ballot to ensure only the voter who requested it can vote with that ballot.
Small towns have objected to the cost of staffing the polls for seven days prior to elections, but First Selectman Henry Tirrell said a $5,000 state grant will help to defray the cost. State Representative Maria Horn said recently it is possible early voting requirements will be relaxed once the expanded access to absentee voting is firmly in place.
