The environmental impact of 9/11 forced a rethinking of New York’s shoreline ecologies. Then, in 2012, Hurricane Sandy submerged downtown New York, reviving the archipelagic logic connecting its forty islands. Today, climate redesign is grappling with the impending challenges of sinking land and rising seas. Berms, dunes, blue-green infrastructure, afforestation, artificial islands and the gradual revitalization of the city’s marshes is reshaping how New Yorkers engage with their fragile coastline. Professor May Joseph will offer a glimpse into storm surge New York on Thursday, October 29 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with “New York Redesign: Sinking City, Rising Seas.”
