Invasive bittersweet is taking over our roadsides. The berries, loved by birds, are ripening. Slowing the spread can begin with reducing the seed bank. The Norfolk Conservation Commission is holding a volunteer event to cut and bag berry laden vines along Winchester Road, Saturday, September 12th at 9:30 a.m. Please meet at Town Hall first to go over the plan, then head to the section of road abutting Aton Forest’s meadow. If you can’t make 9:30, please feel free to join the volunteer teams down there.
Please bring loppers, clippers and any other handy tools. If you have a brush cutting weed whacker to remove any multiflora rose which may be obstructing access to the vines crawling up trees, it would be very helpful.
Protect yourself from poison ivy and ticks by wearing long pants, long sleeved tops, etc. Bring your own water. A snack will be provided.
Please note:
If you can’t make it, you can still help by taking some time to walk around your own property and, at a minimum, cut the tree-climbing vines at shoulder height, and even-better, bag some berries!
