Housatonic Heritage Walk: James Mars, a Journey to Freedom

Born in 1790, James Mars was the last known slave sold in Norfolk. His life journey is a fascinating one. Gaining his freedom at the age of 21, he became a deacon, activist for equal rights and a community leader. Join the Norfolk Historical Society at Norfolk’s Center Cemetery on Sunday, Sept. 19, to learn more about this remarkable man and the many people who helped him along his journey. Meet at the cemetery at 1:00 p.m., rain or shine; please park along the south side of the road.
