6:00 pm - 6:45 pm
Join the Norfolk Library for their monthly Poetry Café in the Great Hall on Wedensday, August 27 from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m. Bring a poem to read (either one you’ve read or written), or come ready to listen to and enjoy poetry. There will not be an academic discussion on the pieces, rather time to celebrate and share the poetry that we love.
August’s theme is Erasure Poetry, taking an existing text and blocking out certain words to create an original poem. Print out a text of your choice and, using a sharpie or dark marker, block out lines of text, leaving specific words of your choosing. Write a new poem using those remaining words. For clarity, feel free to use articles in your poem that may not have been on the original page. Bring both your blackout text and your new poem to the our event. Nonfiction texts work well for this exercise. Browse Internet Archive for a text of your interest, or try one of text images images below. This theme was inspired by Amanda Gorman’s erasure poems in her collection, Call Us What We Carry which we read together for our Juneteenth Poetry Café.
