Norfolk Residents Invited to Thanksgiving Dinner

Norfolk residents are invited to partake of a Thanksgiving feast next Thursday November 28, 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., at Pilgrim House on Granite Avenue in Canaan.

The free community meal, a tradition nearly two decades old, brings together those in need, those who are alone and those who simply enjoy breaking bread with neighbors and friends.

The dinner was started under the auspices of Canaan’s Christ Episcopal Church, with parishioner Bev Becker as coordinator. Trinity Church in Lime Rock took over the event in 2012, according to pastor Heidi Truax.

She said her church is “the hub,” but that many other organizations and businesses are also involved. Becker has remained the driving force behind it, scheduling volunteers and seeking out funding. Annually, the group serves about 100 diners turkey with all the trimmings and a wide variety of desserts, and sends out another score as take-out meals.

The dinner is “a real testimony to [the volunteers’] generosity of spirit,” Truax said. “Many of us gather at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday to peel the vegetables. There is real camaraderie.”

Although the meal is free, donations are welcomed.
