Over the past week, members of the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department, town officials and members of the Fire House Building Committee have all signed the last truss for the new fire house, which will be hoisted into place during a ceremony Saturday, August 29, at 1:00 p.m. at the Shepard Road site.
The signatures will remain with the structure as a permanent reminder of the community members and officials involved in bringing the long-awaited project to fruition.
Members of the public, town officials, emergency services partners, and members of the media are invited to attend.
At a building committee meeting held August 20, it was reported that construction is proceeding at a rapid pace. The concrete slabs have been poured, and the masonry walls are rising. The metal decking over the training area was scheduled for installation this week and roofing is to begin on September 1. Authorization to do preliminary site work for a three-bay garage will be voted upon Wednesday, September 2, at 7:00 p.m. at Botelle School. The Board of Finance authorized an additional $125,000 for the site work.
If approved, it would increase the overall project costs to $10, 525,000 while keeping the borrowing limit at the town-approved $4 million. At this point, the projected long-term debt for the project is expected to be about $3.7 million, even with the additional work associated with the future three-bay garage.
The firefighters hope to move into the new quarters in January, with final completion currently slated for spring 2027.
