The Norfolk Fire Department has issued a cautionary note about disposing of fireplace ashes. Litchfield County Dispatch dispatched first responders to three brush fires in Harwinton, New Hartford and Barkhamsted this week, all started by ashes dumped in the woods.
Point of Information Officer Jon Barbagallo says resident should make sure hot ashes are completely cool before dumping them. Ashes should never be placed in a plastic bucket, paper bag or left inside or near a house. Smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors should have new batteries and be tested regularly to ensure their proper operation while fireplaces and wood or pellet stoves are in use.
