 nd William Larimer Mellon\, Jr.\, scion of the Pittsburgh oil and banking 
 family. Schweitzer's work inspired Mellon to abandon his life as a success
 ful rancher\, to earn a medical degree in mid-life and later establish a w
 ell-equipped hospital in one of the poorest regions of Haiti\, where\, wit
 h his wife\, he spent the rest of his life working as a physician and a co
